Congratulations on Retirement…

Debbie Green - recently retired from Madison Local Schools where she spent most of her teaching career at the elementary level. An avid traveler, she hopes to do much more with her extra time. She has recently returned from a multi-generational family vacation in the Tennessee Smoky Mountains.

Angela Smith - Madison Local Schools Superintendent, has also recently retired. She plans to enjoy more time with her family and travel. She has recently finalized planning a vacation with her husband Matt to the northeastern United States this fall. Angela also hopes to pursue hobbies, especially cross-stitching. She is also open to new adventures!

Individual/Classroom/Community Project Fund Award
Hula Hoop Club

The Educational Services Committee urges you to read this wonderful final report from Jacinta Bertone for the $500.00 Individual/Classroom/ Community Project Fund grant she received for her Hula Hoop Club project. She told a Board Director that 250 students joined the club partly due to the new hula hoops she was able to purchase!
In the winter of 2022, two other staff members and I established the first ever South Elementary School Hula Hoop Club in Madison, Ohio. The SES Hula Hoop Club was designed for 4th graders to learn new skills, try new things, get active, and gain confidence within themselves in a comfortable, judgement-free environment. SES Hula Hoop Club is voluntarily directed, one day a week, for an hour after school. Students learn how to do hula hoop tricks like the coin-flip, hoop dive, orbit, pivot tosses and many more. We also designed an end-of-the-year routine and marched in the Memorial Day Parade. Establishing, directing, and hosting SES Hula Hoop Club has allowed me to teach one of my passions, hula hooping, to students and get them to fall in love with the art of flow, encourage them to try new things and work as a team, and teach them that a little effort and practice can go a long way. As I always say,

“Even professional football players miss catches sometimes."
In January of 2025, ADSOEF Board of Directors awarded me with a grant from the Individual/Classroom/Community Project Fund. I could not have been more ecstatic! With this grant, I was able to purchase 22 professional-grade hula hoops. These hoops have highly impacted the students’ skill levels and progress in their abilities with hula hoop tricks. Up until this year, the students used heavy gym hula hoops, which are great for gym games, but not the best for doing tricks because of how weighted they are. Students could only practice doing tricks with the hoops for a few minutes before it would begin to make their limbs tired. With the professional-grade hoops, students can attempt and accomplish many more hula hoop tricks and feel more successful with themselves than in past years due to the buoyancy and lighter weight of the hoops.
Since we get a new group of 4th grade students every year for the SES Hula Hoop Club, we will be able to use the professional-grade hoops year after year. We also had all the students sign a contract to rent the new hula hoops (free of cost of course) so they can take them home and practice. This has been a huge advancement for the club, but also for the students. We know that all families may not be able or willing to pay +$20.00 for a professional-grade hula hoop, so it has been our pleasure to let students rent the new hoops to practice at home and advance in their skills.
Thank you so much ADSOEF for your support in funding the SES Hula Hoop Club and helping make our club and students more successful than ever before!

Sincerely,
Jacinta Bertone
